What this all adds up to is ‘yer standard swords and sandals battle flick, just the latest in a long line of films of variable quality that includes the recent Pompeii, 2004’s King Arthur and the grandaddy of the modern dusty historical epic, Gladiator.
It’s not even up to 2014 Hercules ’ standard.
Tearing into the most fascinatingly complex role in the film is new cast member Rebecca Ferguson (2014's " Hercules "), a riveting presence as Ilsa Faust.
Ethan's "Ghost Protocol" team is back (and watch for that rabbit's foot), analyst Brandt (Jeremy Renner) now the guy calling the shots, but this film belongs to Swedish actress Rebecca Ferguson (2014's "Hercules") as undercover British Intelligence agent Ilsa Faust, whose career is sure to get a serious boost after her fearless performance here.
This was never going to be a deep movie but outside of the rich cast hired to play them—including Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin, Ving Rhames, Jeremy Renner and newcomer Rebecca Ferguson (Hercules, 2014)—there’s nothing distinguishable about the personalities of the film’s characters.
Thomas E. Sanders' (2013's " After Earth ") production design is impressive to a revelatory degree, as is Brandt Gordon's (2012's " Total Recall ") richly vintage art direction, Fernando Velazquez's (2014's " Hercules ") exquisitely atmospheric orchestrations, and Dan Laustsen's (2012's " The Possession ") beautifully ominous cinematography.
