Rachel Singer is a former Mossad agent who tried to capture a notorious Nazi war criminal – the Surgeon of Birkenau – in a secret Israeli mission that ended with his death on the streets of East Berlin. Now, 30 years later, a man claiming to be the doctor has surfaced, and Rachel must return to Eastern Europe to uncover the truth. Overwhelmed by haunting memories of her younger self and her two fellow agents, the still-celebrated heroine must relive the trauma of those events and confront the debt she has incurred.

What critics compared The Debt to
Moving with urgency, Alexander Berner's (2011's " The Debt ") editorial prowess masterfully finding the parallels between its six time frames, "Cloud Atlas" nonetheless takes the time to listen to, and exhibit aching empathy for, its mountainous collection of characters (nearly all of the actors are featured in up to six different roles, many of them unrecognizable under make-up and effects wizardry).
Filmed in early 2009, The Debt offers peeks at the pre-Avatar Worthington and Chastain before she became this summer's Everywhere Girl in The Tree of Life and as the dotty young wife in The Help (she's also in this fall's Take Shelter and Texas Killing Fields).
Toss in her sexy-strange performance in Al Pacino's Wilde Salome, and the buzz from Cannes for Take Shelter (both coming later this year), and Chastain appears poised to eventually share more than a role with an Oscar winner like Mirren.
Add it to a recent string of impressive performances in very different roles (" Tree of Life ," " The Help ," " The Debt ") that makes a convincing case for 2011 as the Year of Jessica Chastain.
Now she is the It Girl of 2011, on the heels of stellar turns as the mother in "The Tree of Life," the Israeli agent in "The Debt" and the ditzy blonde in "The Help."
