The best action sequence follows a bullet hurtling to its fatalistic destiny, recalling Snyder’s breath-baiting image of a bluebird fleeing the talons of a hawk in Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole .
However, Jenkins might have watched Zack Snyder's "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" too many times before taking on "Wonder Woman," which emulates its showboating, pace-killing overuse of s-l-o-w m-o-t-i-o-n action shots that mostly undermine the narrative momentum.
Along with Rise of the Guardians (also based on a Joyce story) and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole , Epic is at least the third computer-animated family film in recent years with a mythopoeic tale of noble but hidden defenders whose existence is a matter of belief or doubt, not knowledge.
Reminiscent of the reasonably well-made Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, this tale of benevolent little creatures living deep in the forest and their battles with the rotting Boggans has an aura of ambition that will fly directly over the heads of those expecting anthropomorphic animals and pop culture goofiness.
With Rango, Gore Verbinski becomes the latest filmmaker to make the leap from live action to animation – which places him in the company of well-known directors like Robert Zemeckis (Beowulf) and Zack Snyder (Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole).
