Written with a deft touch by Gilroy, who co-penned The Bourne Legacy for director-brother Tony (one of the film's producers), the tightly-framed tale delves into the same voyeuristic themes as Blow-Up and Rear Window .

Making a directorial debut after scripting several Hollywood movies—including Freejack, Two For The Money, and The Bourne Legacy, that last for his brother Tony—Dan Gilroy cross-pollinates genres with sometimes-reckless élan, offering a mishmash of black comedy, breakneck action, and social commentary under the banner of L.A. noir.
Of all the Bourne movies to emulate, Black Widow accidentally takes inspiration from one of its worst ones, rehashing a plot from The Bourne Legacy (complete with “chems” and Rachel Weisz!) in what feels like a gesture toward a message about the agency of women, and how it can be so easily stripped away by evil men.
The film is inspired by the Bourne movie “The Bourne Legacy” and the Mission: Impossible movies (copying its chase scenes), and mixes those two popular movies into this one.
The hand-to-hand combat is far and away the strongest aspect of the spectacle, and while it’s clear that Black Widow is aiming to emulate the highest points of the Mission: Impossible , Jason Bourne and James Bond franchises through face-swapping and bone-crunching scraps, it’s more like John Woo’s polarizing Mission: Impossible II and The Bourne Legacy , which ironically also had Rachel Weisz and a secret chemical compound driving the narrative.

Mark Damon was bitter that Gilroy wrote and directed The Bourne Legacy (2012), starring Jeremy Renner.
That’s helped create a character compelling enough to sustain four (five, if you count 2012’s decent but Damon-free offshoot The Bourne Legacy) films over nearly 15 years.
With director Paul Greengrass compulsively cutting the almost incessant action to the absolute bone in his trademark fashion and some solid new characters stirred in, Universal's franchise refresher should have no problem being re-embraced by longtime series fans nine years on (not counting the lukewarm non-Damon stopgap The Bourne Legacy in 2012).

But a reboot with Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz (“The Bourne Legacy”) felt like a cynical cash grab (although I think it’s a well-made film), and Damon and Greengrass’ next collaboration, the ungainly Iraq War action thriller “Green Zone,” fizzled.
