As Biutiful ended I felt paralyzed myself, by a true overdose of the tragedy of the human condition Inarritu's Amores Perros and Babel were uplifting compared to this.
“ Amores Perros ,” " 21 Grams " and " Babel " were all heavy-going odysseys with little in the way of redemption at the end of the tunnel.
The new film from Alejandro González Iñárritu is more focussed than his previous works, such as “Amores Perros” and “Babel,” though he still tends to glance sideways into secondary plots; the level of melancholy, meanwhile, has intensified beyond all reckoning, and the movie’s mood might well have proved unendurable were it not for the proud and sympathetic presence of Bardem.
After his contentious breakup with screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga, cowriter (with Armando Bo and Nicolás Giacobone)/director Alejandro González Iñárritu ("Amores Perros," "Babel") steps up to the plate with his best film since his debut, proving, perhaps, that his talent needed to stretch away from Arriaga's multi-threaded story format.
In "Biutiful," his Oscar-caliber gravitas has its greatest challenge to date - the insistently glum world of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, whose list of frothy charmers includes "Amores Perros," "21 Grams" and "Babel."
There has been a none-too-slow drop in quality with each of González Iñárritu's consecutive films, from his outstanding 2000 debut Amores perros , one of the key "hyperlink" films, to 2003' s strained but interesting 21 Grams , to 2006's leaden, pretentious Oscar baby Babel .
Taiwanese-American Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was the acknowledged game-changer.
