I knew Rudd could sing from previous appearances in Anchorman, I Love You, Man, and Friendship.
After Peter Klaven's (Paul Rudd, "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," "Role Models") proposed to Zooey (Rashida Jones, TV's "The Office"), the girl of his dreams, the friends and family circle around them begin to notice that Peter doesn't really have any male friends.
The film starts off slowly, then hits its stride when Peter meets Sydney (Forgetting Sarah Marshall's Jason Segel.)
Segel ("Forgetting Sarah Marshall") plays Sydney Fife, a Venice Beach layabout who Peter meets after a series of "man dates" and poker nights have gone spectacularly awry.
The definition of Hollywood’s new leading men, Rudd and Segal complement each other very well, with I Love You, Man their third collaboration together, after Knocked Up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
And then there's Jason Segel (2008's " Forgetting Sarah Marshall "), a charming up-and-comer who has the unlucky misfortune of portraying the movie's largest miscalculation of a character.
Segel - a gnarly, Vince Vaughn type with the social ineptitude of a Will Ferrell - appeared in Apatow's TV show "Freaks & Geeks" and wrote and starred in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," which Apatow produced and which also featured Rudd.
In what is essentially a generational clash over lifestyles and values, director Hamburg (I Love You, Man, Along Came Polly) mines some familiar comedic ground.
Why Him? continues a theme found in I Love You, Man, one with which director John Hamburg (also writer of Meet the Parents) is so familiar—that of approaching male relationships through a historically romantic Hollywood nucleus.
For this puerile farce, director John Hamburg (I Love You, Man) recycles a tired premise—a straitlaced father disapproves of his daughter's freewheeling boyfriend—and then drowns it in moose urine (really).
