Two doctors find their graveyard shift inundated with townspeople ravaged by sores. Among the wounded is Cherry Darling, a dancer whose leg was ripped from her body. As the invalids quickly become enraged aggressors, Cherry and her ex-boyfriend El Wray lead a team of accidental warriors into the night.

What critics compared Planet Terror to
Julius Avery directs this high-energy, low-imagination genre mashup, a combination of Inglourious Basterds and Planet Terror that is not nearly as fun as that description might imply.
When I watch a movie like Safe I have to wonder whether Yakin’s had some kind of comedic genius, succeeding where films like Machete, Planet Terror and Hobo with a Shotgun have failed – being so appalling with such a straight face and sustaining it for 90 minutes, so-to speak.
The director’s films have always been hodgepodges of influences from the deepest corners of film history, but his reverence for cinema’s legacy goes beyond his directorial style: With 2007’s Grindhouse , he presented his movie Death Proof as a double feature with Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror , complete with fake trailers in the middle; and since 2007 he’s owned the New Beverly Cinema in LA, insisting that every movie shown at the venerable repertory house be projected on film.
