It’s less roiling than “World War Z,” less ingenious than a good “Ocean’s” film, less all-for-one inspiring than “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
They’re more in the vein of World War Z than earlier incarnations.
Las Vegas’ rotten inhabitants challenge zombie lore and tinker with subgenre expectations in positive regard given the World War Z meets Ultimate Tag parkour aggression.
There are rules to how the zombies in this film work that haven't really been explored before, with the "Alphas" feeling more like the vampires in I Am Legend than anything from The Walking Dead or World War Z .
Arguably the most big-budget, epic take on a zombie apocalypse since World War Z , Snyder makes a triumphant return to the horror genre that should please both his cult-like following and more casual horror fans.
Imagine the avalanche of walkers in World War Z, only in much more colorful dress (this is the glitz and glam of Vegas, baby!) and you get the idea.
A passion project Snyder tried getting off the ground at Warner Bros. years ago until Netflix swooped in, the director's return to the zombie genre for the first time since 2004 combines concepts from films such as George A. Romero's "Land of the Dead" (2005), "Suicide Squad" (2016), and "Ocean 11" (2001) along with fantasy TV show, "Game of Thrones."
One might call it his Suicide Squad , too, if that didn’t imply that the Man Of Steel director were still navigating a thunderously grim superhero universe of his own design, when he has in fact left it behind for one arguably just as indebted to the graphic component of graphic novels, just with a smaller helping of heavy-handed handwringing.
With hints of Escape From New York , it’s not a wholly original premise — just last year, in fact, Train To Busan sequel Peninsula followed a similar ‘heist, but with zombies’ concept.
