Claus von Stauffenberg returns to his native Germany and joins the Resistance in a daring plan to create a shadow government and assassinate Adolf Hitler. What critics compared Valkyrie to
Watching Inglourious Basterds, I was reminded of Paul Verhoeven's Black Book and Bryan Singer's Valkyrie , both of which contain themes and ideas that are echoed here.

In a comment under my review of “Valkyrie”, a movie starring Tom Cruise as a Nazi officer who attempted to assassinate Hitler, MN Roy suggested I look at GW Pabst’s 1955 “Jackboot Mutiny”, another movie dramatizing the General’s revolt.
Putting a German army uniform on a contemporary American actor (Tom Cruise in Valkyrie ) makes for instant risibility, while placing a beautiful movie star in a fake concentration camp (Meryl Streep in Sophie’s Choice ) could be said to make a mockery of the real victims’ undocumented suffering.
Inglourious Basterds suggests that if Tom Cruise really wanted to kill Hitler in Valkyrie, he would have taken the Führer to a picture show.
Sure The Twilight Saga is trying to take vampires away from us, and Valkyrie made a good case for Nazis, but Tarantino puts the stranglehold on history and let’s the Nazis have it.
Tales of organized resistance against the Third Reich are plentiful, dating back to the fall of the government and even extending to more recent films like Valkyrie , Defiance and Anthropoid .
Over the last 15 years or so, McQuarrie has served as Tom Cruise’s amanuensis, earning screenplay credits by channeling the star’s persona into Valkyrie , Jack Reacher , Edge of Tomorrow , and The Mummy in addition to serving as the writer-director on the four final Mission: Impossible movies (the last two of which are to debut in 2023 and 2024).
