As Daniel, Kevin Weisman (2006's " Clerks II ") brings nothing subtle to the part; he plays it so broadly, in fact, that it is cause for awkward laughs and the feeling that he'd be right at home in a bad-taste spoof movie about people with handicaps.
Flipped, Reiner's first stab at a family film since the disastrous North, comes nowhere near the beautifully constructed brilliance of Princess Bride, but it's nonetheless Reiner's best effort in more than ten years.
As Juli's sympathetic father Richard, Aidan Quinn (2010's " The Eclipse ") is warm and down-to-earth, caring for a family that also includes a mentally disabled younger brother Daniel (Kevin Weisman).
Actor, writer, producer, and director Rob Reiner is no stranger to films for and/or about children ("Stand By Me," "The Princess Bride"), so "Flipped," his 2010 romance involving childhood friends, should have been a cinch.
But then from "Stand by Me," that 1986 classic ode to boyhood based on the Stephen King novel, Reiner has become something of a savant when it comes to turning books into movies, with "The Princess Bride" and "Misery" among his standouts and "Flipped" about to join them.
Reiner should just be grateful that a director’s bad movies can’t negate his good ones, or the world would wake up tomorrow to discover that The Princess Bride and This Is Spinal Tap—the last film before Flipped to feature a Reiner writing credit—had mysteriously vanished, along with the respect Reiner once commanded from critics and audiences alike.
