After Hamlet — a critical success, though not a financial one – Branagh floundered a bit, directing another Shakepeare adaptation, Love’s Labour’s Lost, then The Magic Flute, followed by yet another Shakespeare work, As You Like It.
Directed by Kenneth Branagh (Thor, As You Like It) from a script by Chris Weitz (About a Boy), this Cinderella isn’t flashy and doesn’t forge a new path, but it does have adorable mice to cheer for and a villain to hiss.
Branagh ("Henry V," "As You Like It," "Hamlet," "Othello") takes the 1950 animated Disney version that has come to define Cinderella as his starting point.
Kenneth Branagh has directed several Shakespeare adaptations, including revisionist versions of “As You Like It” and “Love’s Labour’s Lost,” so he’s not averse to taking artistic risks with beloved material.
