What screenwriter Mark Perez (“Herbie Fully Loaded”) and co-directors John Francis Daley (“Vacation”) and Jonathan Goldstein (“Horrible Bosses”) put them through is an absurdly complicated, violent and self-aware farce — a night-long chase through the mean streets, often in conflict with real bad guys whom they don’t realize aren’t just “actors” with Murder We Wrote, the mystery staging party company.
Directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Vacation) from a screenplay by Mark Perez (best-known, till now, for Herbie Fully Loaded), this comedy caper plays for keeps.
Game Night is Daley and Goldstein’s second feature, with a script credited to Mark Perez, esteemed author of Herbie Fully Loaded and The Country Bears.
Screenwriter Mark Perez (Accepted, Herbie Fully Loaded) has engineered a deliciously anarchic scenario that plays out like the haphazard, devil-may-care composite of fellow subversively absurdist comedies like Into the Night, Adventures in Babysitting, Risky Business, After Hours and Date Night, while directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein handle all the chaos and calamity with confidence and flair.
Although the screenplay was written by Perez, whose past credits are hardly reassuring (that is, unless you’re a superfan of The Country Bears, Herbie Fully Loaded, and/or Accepted), Daley and Goldstein’s influence is all over this film.
If I were to tell you a month ago that a new high concept comedy from the directors of 2015’s woeful Vacation remake and the screenwriter of Herbie Fully Loaded was one of 2018’s first pleasant surprises, is there any chance you’d actually believe me?
Instead, he finds himself in a three way tie with The King and perpetual second-placer Chick Hicks (Michael Keaton, "Herbie Fully Loaded") and a Piston Cup runoff is scheduled one week hence in Los Angeles.
