What critics compared All the Real Girls to
In his quietly stunning performance as a French teenager of Arab descent spending six years in prison, Tahar Rahim looks not unlike a thinner, more intense Danny McBride, and his nervous, awkward mannerisms reminded me of McBride’s small, but crucial role in David Gordon Green’s lyrical All the Real Girls (2003), in which he played a soft-spoken, not particularly bright young man on the margins of society.
Up to then, "Pineapple" proves a very amusing hybrid movie combining the not-quite-grown-up man-boy humor of the Judd Apatow breed with the judiciously artful directorial style of indie auteur David Gordon Green ("George Washington," "All the Real Girls").

Admittedly, that's not a very fresh concept, but it's done fairly well in Pineapple Express, thanks to some fine performances: Rogen basically plays himself like he always does, Franco is positively giddy as a joy-filled stoner, and Danny McBride (of Green's All the Real Girls ) is the comic stand-out as Saul's supplier, a pop-culture addicted faux tough guy.
With "Snow Angels" and "All the Real Girls" on his C.V., David Gordon Green is a counterintuitive choice for director.
But the movie -- directed by David Gordon Green, the guy behind low-key (if self-important) indie hits like "George Washington" and "All the Real Girls" -- is so wayward and fuzzy that, for the unbaked, at least, there's very little pleasure to be had in trying to follow it.
Heck, Danny McBride's first big screen role was in Green's "All the Real Girls", as a character named Bust-Ass!
Green, whose eclectic career ranges from stoner comedies ( Pineapple Express , Your Highness ) to hushed dramas ( All the Real Girls , Snow Angels ) to the recent inspirational biopic Stronger , may seem like an odd choice to helm a horror movie, but he’s a dedicated craftsman, and he’s clearly studied Carpenter’s work closely.
They are, essentially, tools for director David Gordon Green ( Joe , All the Real Girls ) to hand the audience the backstory needed to not only dive into Halloween without researching the canon.
