The Emperor's New Clothes (2001)

Napoleon, exiled, devises a plan to retake the throne. He'll swap places with commoner Eugene Lenormand, sneak into Paris, then Lenormand will reveal himself and Napoleon will regain his throne. Things don't go at all well; first, the journey proves more difficult than expected, but more disastrously, Lenormand enjoys himself too much to reveal the deception. Napoleon adjusts somewhat uneasily to the life of a commoner while waiting, while Lenormand gorges on rich food.

What critics compared The Emperor's New Clothes to
Ian Holm plays Napoleon for the second time (he had previously portrayed the character in a 1974 mini-series called "Napoleon in Love", and would eventually reprise the part in 2001's The Emperor's New Clothes).

Referencing “The Emperor’s New Clothes” always strikes me as a slightly lazy technique in reviewing film, but I’m not sure there has been a film so suited to the comparison in years.
14 years after HBO’s groundbreaking drama series “The Sopranos” aired its final episode (after 86 episodes–starting in 1999 & ending in 2007), arguably the greatest show in TV history, now opens as a movie in theaters with a new episode that’s written by the TV show’s creator David Chase (and co-written by his writing partner Lawrence Konner) and directed by the show’s sometime director Alan Taylor (“Kill The Poor”/”The Emperor’s New Clothes”).
