A boating accident off the coast of Spain sends Paul and his girlfriend Barbara to the decrepit fishing village of Imboca. As night falls, people start to disappear and things not quite human start to appear. Paul is pursued by the entire town. Running for his life, he uncovers Imboca's secret..they worship Dagon, a monstrous god of the sea...and Dagon's unholy offspring are on the loose...

What critics compared Dagon to
"Frankenstein's Army" represent's Raaphorst's feature directorial debut, but he has many credits as a concept and storyboard artist on such European-made films as Paul Verhoeven's "Black Book" and Stuart Gordon's "Dagon."
Once you’ve seen Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator , From Beyond , and Dagon , and a couple other stragglers, you’re at a bit of a loss for decently budgeted, faithful takes on the cosmic horror pioneer.
Gordon returned to the well several times with diminishing results in From Beyond (1986), Castle Freak (1995), and Dagon (2001).
For fans of Lovecraft, this may well be the most successful attempt to bring his warped writings to the screen, and is definitely up there with Stuart Gordon's Dagon and Dreams in the Witch House –the most loyal conversions to date (it's thrilling news indeed that Stanley gets to do this again with a new take on Lovecraft's The Dunwich Horror).
It is unfortunate timing that the film is being released near the recent death of director Stuart Gordon, whose made a name for himself with his own run of Lovecraft projects ( Re-Animator , From Beyond , Dagon ) which layered Lovecraft stories with a very contemporary perversity that made them modern horror classics.
Based on a story by early twentieth-century writer of horror H.P. Lovecraft, Dagon is quite obviously a labor of love by director and devoted Lovecraft fan Stuart Gordon (best known for cult favorite Re-Animator, also based on a Lovecraft tale).
Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon returns to literary horror with Dagon, another H.P. Lovecraft adaptation that takes his trademark grisliness to Spain for a real fish-out-of-water yarn having to do with love, sex and demon worship.
Director Stuart Gordon and producer Brian Yuzna -- the filmmakers whose very first feature film Re-Animator in 1985 attained instant cult status and remains to this day a touchstone of modern horror filmmaking for its adroit blend of grotesque imagery and humorous self-awareness -- are back with this new H.P. Lovecraft-inspired fish story, Dagon.
Just like "Re-Animator" sold us on the idea of a lecherous severed head, and "From Beyond" made a case that the pineal gland might well be the encasement of a sixth sense, "Dagon" tosses us onto a Spanish beach where mutant fish people prey on hapless visitors.
Unfortunately, when the âDagonistesâ assemble en masse, they move with roughly the speed of George Romero's zombies in Night of the Living Dead -- which means that healthy human beings should be able to outrun these slow-moving amphibious creatures and escape to safety in a neighboring town: end of story.
