The duo, played by the electrifying Jason Mewes and a tight-lipped Smith, outdo even their nuttiest previous exploits (and that includes the wild ride Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back).
The actor's always been a scene-stealer in movies like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Old School (not to mention his hilarious work on Saturday Night Live), but with Elf, Ferrell proves that he's got the charisma and presence to carry a movie on his shoulders and even manages to hold his own opposite experienced folks like Caan and Bob Newhart.
A pinch of " Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back ," a dash of " Adventureland ," and a dollop of " The Bourne Identity " serve to concoct "American Ultra," a genre-bending stoner comedy that proves most successful as a romantic action-thriller.
Newman lazily recycles jokes from the likes of "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," including a jurist named Judge Reinhold, who in this movie is played not by Reinhold but by Billy Dee Williams.

The duo are always watchable, even as the movie is recycling gags and tropes not just from "Planes, Trains," but from the first " National Lampoon's Vacation " picture, the immortal " The Big Lebowski " and even, just for good measure, " Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back ."
While Clerks II and Zack and Miri Make a Porno also share such a tag, the writer/director delivers a devastating deconstruction of the male ego with this ‘penetrating’ portrait of affection and defeat.
Deacon (Jeff Anderson, "Clerks," "Clerks II") is brought on to run the camera and auditions produce Bubbles (Traci Lords, "Open Up Traci," "Cry-Baby"), Barry (Ricky Mabe, "Isn't She Great," "Trailer Park of Terror"), Stacey (Katie Morgan, "Playgirl: Naughty and Uncensored") and Lester 'the molester' (Jason Mewes, "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back"), but when they arrive on set near the completion of "Star Whores" and find their warehouse and its contents under demolition the demoralized filmmakers are forced to regroup.
Kevin Smith, now thirty-eight, is the potty-mouthed boy from New Jersey who established himself as an apostate with “Dogma” (1999) and as a chronicler of the underemployed with such comedies as “Clerks” (1994), “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” (2001), and “Clerks II” (2006).
Smith stalwarts Jason Mewes (Jay from Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) as an enthusiastic copulator and Jeff Anderson (Clerks, Dogma) as the cameraman keep things familiar.
When Chris Rock did it in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, he was making fun of angry filmmakers and hapless assistants.
