The Story of Us (1999)

Directed by Rob Reiner

After 15 years of marriage, Katie and her husband, Ben, have grown apart. While they keep up the facade of having a contented marriage, mostly to not worry their children, they aren't happy together and argue frequently. While the kids are away at camp, Katie and Ben decide to separate and try to reassess their relationship to see if they should stay together or split up for good.

What critics compared The Story of Us to

This is why The Princess Bride and Stand By Me work so well for so many people, though I am personally also fond of The Story of Us.
How does a filmmaker go from making gems like “This is Spinal Tap,” “The Sure Thing,” “When Harry Met Sally” and “Misery” to the likes of “Alex and Emma,” “The Story of Us,” “Rumor Has It” and now this wallow for the aging Me Generation?
RUMOR HAS IT..., ALEX & EMMA, and THE STORY OF US, not to mention the notorious flop NORTH, are far cries from his work on THIS IS SPINAL TAP and THE PRINCESS BRIDE.
Truth to tell, The Story of Us (1999), Alex & Emma (2003) and Rumor Has It... (2005) haven't added to his reputation, and The Bucket List isn't likely to either.

Writer/director Jessie Nelson, whose previous writing credits include The Story of Us and Stepmom , opts to flex some creative muscle with her first directing credit by shooting almost the entire film using hand-held cameras.

Check this tooth-rot: She directed of Corrina, Corrina and cowrote Stepmom and The Story of Us.
No doubt director Jessie Nelson ("The Story of Us", "Stepmom" - a man intent on cornering the market on sentimentality) and the studio fell in love with the precocious Dakota Fanning to play young Lucy.
Now, thanks to writer/director Jessie Nelson (the perpetrator behind "Corrina, Corrina", "The Story of Us", and "Stepmom"), he's playing an autistic/mentally-challenged Beatles-obsessed man locked in a custody battle for a lovable 7-year-old tow-headed moppet.

The most glaring is the annoying camera work of cinematographer Elliot Davis ("The Next Best Thing," "Out of Sight") under the direction of director Jessie Nelson ("Corrina, Corrina," co-writer of "The Story of Us" and "Stepmom").
