Though the patriarch of the clan thinks he's dangerous, eventually this outsider becomes the leader of the clan—just like Disney's "Tarzan," in fact.
It's essentially a prehistoric road movie with a little Tarzan thrown in for good measure (once again, Disney recycles themes and ideas).
But it has so many echoes of previous Disney cartoons, especially the wilderness extravaganzas -- "Bambi," "The Jungle Book," "The Lion King" and "Tarzan" -- it registers as a hollow audiovisual remix.
Unlike Minnie Driver in 1999's far superior "Tarzan" or Demi Moore in 1996's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," the voice work, supplied by several well-known actors (i.e.
It's all rather formulaic Disney material, borrowing entire scenes, subplots and character relationships from any number of previous Disney and non-Disney animated features, including last year's "Tarzan" and Don Bluth's 1988 feature "The Land Before Time," whose story "Dinosaur" replicates almost verbatim.
The prehistoric quest motif has been covered in animated movies like Dinosaur and The Land Before Time, while the ‘good-natured creatures as surrogate babysitters’ theme seems partially cribbed from 2001’s fantastic Monsters, Inc.
Walt Disney apparently agreed, and decided to "remake" the thing 12 years later when they created 2000's animated dud, Dinosaur.
It's part "Dinosaur" (that Disney movie from the summer of 2000), part "Shrek" (no explanation needed there I hope) and, whenever that bug-eyed prehistoric squirrel's on screen, trying to bury his acorn (if you haven't seen the hysterical coming attractions for this film at least a dozen times you're obviously on the wrong planet), all fun.
