He and screenwriter Don Jakoby transform John Steakley’s novel “Vampire$” into a perverse remake of Howard Hawks’ Rio Bravo by way of Sergio Leone, with James Woods as a foul-mouthed, hard-drinking, whore-mongering John Wayne leading a wild bunch of hard-edged vampire hunters.
Remove the supernatural elements and you have a western where tenuous alliances are forged to defeat the common enemy, something straight out of Hawks’ Rio Bravo among others.
Assault on Precinct 13 is more or less a remake of Rio Bravo, and there are western elements in the fabric of such films as Big Trouble In Little China, Escape From New York, and They Live.
Coogler pays tribute to John Carpenter, combining the rural setting of “Vampires” with a scene that recalls the blood test in “The Thing.”

The supporting actors?among them, John Hawkes (2007's " American Gangster ") as loose cannon Uncle Teardrop, feeling a sense of protectiveness over his only brother's children; Dale Dickey (2009's " The Perfect Getaway ") as Merab, a short-fused enigma of empathy and viciousness in her actions toward Ree; newcomer Lauren Sweetser as Gail, Ree's best friend, already with baby and in a faltering marriage; Shelley Weggener (2002's " Punch-Drunk Love ") as Sonya, the Dollys' neighbor; and Sheryl Lee (1998's " Vampires ") as April, a former lover of Ree's father with key information to give her?strike not a single false note, each one looking not like performers but like real residents of the Ozark Mountains.
