What critics compared MouseHunt to
Goofy to a fault, “Rango” is a collaboration of Industrial Light & Magic’s hip new team of animators, director Gore Verbinski (the inspired “Mousehunt” an three “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies), and screenwriter John Logan, who, with “Gladiator” and “The Aviator” to his credit, obviously has a deep affection for old movies.
There were early signs of a mind that likes to operate off the grid in "Mousehunt," the first feature Verbinski directed.
His remake of The Ring and the first Pirates of the Caribbean flick were a one-two step that seemed more indicative of his promise than the not-awful-in-retrospect The Mexican and the awful but not bloated Mousehunt.
That’s right, better than Mousehunt.
This film is the result of direction by Gore Verbinski of Pirates of the Caribbean and Mousehunt fame, and a script from John Logan (Any Given Sunday,Sweeney Todd).
Gore Verbinski has directed three “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies and “The Lone Ranger,” plus “The Ring,” “Rango,” and “Mousehunt,” as well as under-seen gems “The Mexican” and “The Weather Man.”
Verbinski is one of the most versatile and stylish big-ticket filmmakers to make that music video-to-Hollywood leap, never bothering with indie-maverick mode and yet still making strange movies for children and families (Mousehunt and Rango), hard-to-classify dramedies (The Weather Man; The Mexican), horror (The Ring), and fantasy adventures (Pirates and Ranger).
