What critics compared Star Trek: First Contact to
In the middle, on 21st century Earth are Academy Award nominees Alfre Woodard (for 1983's "Cross Creek" ) and James Cromwell (who was Farmer Hoggett in "Babe" ).
And Alice Krige (who was scary in both "Ghost Story" and "Star Trek: First Contact") can't even muster enough energy to appear sinister here.
It's not the talented Mitchell's fault -- even the finest actress couldn't possibly rise above this material -- but others, in particular Alice Krige ("Star Trek: First Contact") as the town's high priestess, really embarrass themselves.
Absent are the high-minded ideals evident in more optimistic productions such as E.T. , Close Encounters , and Star Trek: First Contact .
It’s a convention of science fiction films and it rarely works there (see Star Trek: First Contact for one of film history’s few capable time-hopping stories), so it’s no surprise that it doesn’t happen well here.

The cottage is also home to a creepy old crone played by Alice Kruge, whose career includes a turn as the Borg queen in Star Trek: First Contact.
And sure, she's basically just playing the Borg Queen from Star Trek: First Contact again, but that was a very good performance, and it translates into a folkloric wicked witch with surprisingly little lost.
Lillis’ low-key performance might be perfectly in tune with Perkins’ vision of craziness presented ever so matter of factly but its lack of variety means Krige, a horror/sci-fi veteran (the Borg Queen of “Star Trek: First Contact,” “Ghost Story”), must do all the heavy lifting.
Lillis, who was so delightful and spunky in the two It films, warms up her scenes with her character's younger brother, and Krige (the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact ) has a slithery quality that makes her witch somehow hypnotic.
In fact, she’s a veteran character actress whose 100+ roles almost certainly include things you’ve seen; she’s probably best known as the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact, though genre fans will remember her truly remarkable starring role in 1981’s Ghost Story.
Gretel and Hansel, on the verge of collapse, are grateful to find Holda (STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT’s Alice Krige) and her domicile and so are we.
While a rehashing of sci-fi tropes have paid off with such enjoyable entries as The Voyage Home and Star Trek First Contact, Star Trek on the big screen has seldom seemed prepared to leave the familiar behind and capture the thrill of discovery promised by interstellar travel.
In a scenario clearly influenced by "The Terminator," the Borg attempt to infiltrate Earth in the 21st century so they can reverse a significant historical event.

The roles that went to talented ladies such as Mary McCormack (High Heels and Low Lifes), Conchata Ferrel, and Alfre Woodard (Star Trek: First Contact) could have been played by just about anyone.
Not only does this film remind audiences of the music before disco -- often to quite humorous extremes as we're treated to some fun and funky songs long since buried in our memories -- but the clothes -- recreated by costume designer Deborah Everton ("Star Trek: First Contact," "The Abyss") -- hairstyles and general attitude of the time don't escape unscathed either.
