The Pallbearer (1996)

Directed by Matt Reeves

Aspiring architect Tom Thompson is told by mysterious Ruth Abernathy that his best friend, "Bill," has taken his own life. Except that Tom has never met Bill and neither have his incredulous friends. So when Tom foolishly agrees to give the eulogy at Bill's funeral, it sets him on a collision course with Ruth -- who is revealed to be Bill's oversexed mother -- and Julie DeMarco, the longtime crush Tom hasn't seen since they were teens.

What critics compared The Pallbearer to

After an inauspicious opening act in the ‘90s, in which he co-wrote Steven Seagal’s Under Siege 2 and made the David Schwimmer vehicle The Pallbearer, Reeves reinvented himself on television as J.J. Abrams’ “Felicity” co-creator.
El realizador que le ha tocado en gracia retomar el personaje, Matt Reeves, acumulaba en su haber dos películas anodinas y dos buenas de verdad en lo que atañe a su fase mainstream después de dos horrendos opus iniciales en la comarca indie, Future Shock (1994), antología fantástica codirigida por Oley Sassone y Eric Parkinson, y El Funebrero ( The Pallbearer , 1996), una comedia romántica bastante lamentable, hablamos por supuesto de Cloverfield (2008), mixtura deslucida entre found footage y epopeya de monstruos en la tradición de Godzilla, y Déjame Entrar ( Let Me In , 2010), remake muy inferior del neoclásico de terror de Tomas Alfredson del 2008, por un lado, y las muy disfrutables El Planeta de los Simios: Confrontación ( Dawn of the Planet of the Apes , 2014) y El Planeta de los Simios: La Guerra ( War for the Planet of the Apes , 2017), ambas secuelas de El Planeta de los Simios: (R)Evolución ( Rise of the Planet of the Apes , 2011), el también épico y admirable trabajo de Rupert Wyatt…

But director Matt Reeves, whose one previous feature film was a dreary thing called The Pallbearer , has combined overfamiliar elements in an efficiently gripping crash-and-burn sci-fi/horror romp.

Director Matt Reeves, a friend of Abrams' since childhood (and director of David Schwimmer's failed bid for movie-stardom, The Pallbearer), provides a feature-length yakker on the Cloverfield DVD that's meticulously-organized, packed with useful and interesting anecdotes, and larded high with what appears to be a completely genuine, not-false self-deprecation.

Produced by "Lost's" J.J. Abrams, but directed by his "Felicity" colleague Matt Reeves ("The Pallbearer"), "Cloverfield" is clearly a reflection of post 9/11 fears that boasts terrific effects but roots in several recent films, making it something of a letdown after all its pre-release hype.

His first feature was an unwatchable nineties Graduate rip-off called The Pallbearer, starring David Schwimmer of all friggin’ people.
