Apparently, the producers of Jumanji wanted this film to be a Jurassic Park for 1995's holiday season.
It certainly didn't do Johnston's career any harm: this year he's directing the second sequel to megahit " Jurassic Park ".
Jumanji is cardboard Spielberg, a B-movie scrap heap of spare parts lifted from Jurassic Park and Gremlins and Back to the Future.
Based on a children's book by Chris van Allsburg, it's a children's film like Jurassic Park was: older kids may love it, but their parents may want to get under the seat.
Every roll of the dice brings a new challenge: a squadron of bats (in a scene borrowed from "The Birds" ); an outsized lion; some huge crocodiles; pigeon-sized mosquitoes and such random horrors as a monsoon and a gigantic killer vine with flowers a la "Little Shop of Horrors."

The monkeys certainly aren't convincing and the Little Shop of Horrors Audrey II-type man-eating plant would have been more effective had it broken into a song.

He shared an Oscar for the visual effects on Raiders Of The Lost Ark and I think he's still more at home with digital actors than the walking, talking sort.?

Astonishing to think the chubby star of " Bicentennial Man " and "Patch Adams" is the same actor from "Good Morning Vietnam" and "The Fisher King".
