Morgan Adams and her slave, William Shaw, are on a quest to recover the three portions of a treasure map. Unfortunately, the final portion is held by her murderous uncle, Dawg. Her crew is skeptical of her leadership abilities, so she must complete her quest before they mutiny against her. This is made yet more difficult by the efforts of the British crown to end her pirate raids.

Gore Verbinski who did an excellent directing job in the recent thriller “ The Ring ” conveys the true spirit of swashbuckling films in “Pirates of the Caribbean”, a film that is very reminiscent of the old Errol Flynn Pirate epics that stunned audiences in the early 1900’s in its truest essence; the swashbuckling film genre is dead only recently being brought to the screen with the bland “Cutthroat Island” a film that had style but little substance.
And Geena Davis... well, the jury is still out as to what the hell Geena Davis was thinking when she delivered us to the evil that was "Cutthroat Island"!
"Cutthroat Island" was one of the most expensive duds in film history and all but ruined the once-promising careers of Geena Davis and Renny Harlin.
The pirate genre has been in a perennial funk since Errol Flynn died -- burdened by latter-day efforts like Hook and Cutthroat Island which crushed their entertainment value beneath bloat and bombast.
Director Renny Harlin (of Cutthroat Island infamy) does nothing to make his film stylish or different.
The latest picture from Renny Harlin -- the epic action director responsible for "Cliffhanger," "The Long Kiss Goodnight" and the abysmal "Cutthroat Island" -- this release will surely draw immediate comparisons to the "Jaws" films, but clearly lifts as much source material from any of those sinking boat or aliens in tight quarters pictures.
Director Renny Harlin ( "Cutthroat Island," "The Long Kiss Goodnight" ) could have at least done us the courtesy of saving the shopworn cliches until after the opening credits.
The movie is a skillful thriller directed by Renny Harlin , who made "Die Hard 2'' and "Cutthroat Island,'' and here assembles a neat package of terror, sharks and special effects.

The direction of The Lost City is aiming for classic romance-comedy-adventure similar to Romancing the Stone , Six Days Seven Nights , or Cutthroat Island , but leaning heavier into the comedy than the adventure.

Scripted by Michael Frost Beckner (the woebegone "Cutthroat Island") and David Arata ("Brokedown Palace"), "Spy Game" details a crisis in the lives of veteran spook Nathan Muir (Redford) and his young protégé Tom Bishop (Pitt).
To begin with, it seems a little presumptuous to expect political insight of a movie with a story from Michael Frost Beckner, the scenarist of Cutthroat Island , as filtered through the directorial sensibilities of Tony Scott, who handled the aggressively apolitical Crimson Tide and the generically Reagan-era Top Gun .
His credits include "Prince Valiant" (1997), "Cutthroat Island" (1995), "Sniper" (1993) and TV's "The Agency".
In any case, it's no wonder this movie did poorly at the box office, despite its high-profile cast--Val Kilmer, Christian Slater, LL Cool J--and its veteran action director, Renny Harlin ("Nightmare on Elm Street 4," "Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger," "Cutthroat Island," "Deep Blue Sea," "Driven," "Exorcist: The Beginning").
Renny Harlin can do overt silliness (Cliffhanger, Cutthroat Island), or he can do grandiose, perhaps unwarranted self-righteousness ( Exorcist: The Beginning ).
