When a son and mother move to Seattle in hopes for a better life, the mother meets a seemingly polite man. Things go south when the man turns out to be abusive, endangering their lives. As the mother struggles to maintain hope in an impossible situation, the son has plans to escape.

What critics compared This Boy's Life to
Any movie that lifts from both "This Boy's Life" and "Meatballs" is a rarefied creation, and in this case a pretty wonderful movie.
Although Snook is not 100 percent convincing as a full-grown male—she looks like the young Leonardo DiCaprio in This Boy’s Life (92)—her eloquence as a performer, and the Spierigs’ empathy and cleverness, make you eager to suspend disbelief.
But the longer the film goes on, and the more its figures solidify into actual characters, the less magical it seems, until eventually it resembles a solid but largely unexceptional memoir not unlike, say, This Boy’s Life.
I was reminded of the performance of then teenage DiCaprio in This Boy's Life (1993) in which he mimics the shtick of his sociopathic stepfather, played by De Niro.
