After his father's death, a young boy finds solace in action movies featuring an indestructible cop. Given a magic ticket by a theater manager, he is transported into the film and teams up with the cop to stop a villain who escapes into the real world.

What critics compared Last Action Hero to
Then again, when the golden ticket manages to bring to life characters from (and, no I’m not kidding here) Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (1957), it’s hard to imagine much of the usual audience of young action fans the marketing targeted getting this concept at all.
The meta nature of the film is reminiscent of comedies such as Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping , Top Secret , Last Action Hero , and The Nice Guys .
It’s all basically a setup for a movie within a movie (such as in “Last Action Hero” or “Get Shorty,” with the flavor of accidental impersonations like in “North by Northwest”), boasting a delightfully self-aware styling (the script tends to evolve as the characters mull over how their actions might be more engaging in a movie setting) that features countless references to Cage’s past performances.
Shane Black is primarily known in some circles for appearing in a supporting role in the original Predator, better known in other circles for penning such action romps as Lethal Weapon and Last Action Hero, and mainly known in my circle for writing and directing the underrated gems Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys.
Ever since he first came up with the characters of Riggs and Murtaugh in 1987’s Lethal Weapon, Black has been slowly but surely building up his resume and experience with the likes of The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero and The Long Kiss Goodnight.
The flat jokes are a strange misstep for writer-director Shane Black, who, between The Nice Guys, The Long Kiss Goodnight (and yeah, let’s throw Last Action Hero in there too), has a proven track record with quick-witted characters.
For those who don’t know, Shane Black is responsible for writing cult-classic films of the 1980s and 1990s, including Lethal Weapon (1987), The Monster Squad (1987), The Last Boy Scout (1991), Last Action Hero (1993) and The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996).

This, again, allows for a different kind of story that’s less True Lies (1994) and more Last Action Hero (1993).

So, instead of a Last Action Hero for gore, we get Tron: Ares: a functional, if uninspired, fan-service return that feels drained of all the tonal originality of the first movie.
