What critics compared Last Action Hero to
Then again, when the golden ticket manages to bring to life characters from (and, no I’m not kidding here) Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (1957), it’s hard to imagine much of the usual audience of young action fans the marketing targeted getting this concept at all.
The meta nature of the film is reminiscent of comedies such as Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping , Top Secret , Last Action Hero , and The Nice Guys .
It’s all basically a setup for a movie within a movie (such as in “Last Action Hero” or “Get Shorty,” with the flavor of accidental impersonations like in “North by Northwest”), boasting a delightfully self-aware styling (the script tends to evolve as the characters mull over how their actions might be more engaging in a movie setting) that features countless references to Cage’s past performances.
Shane Black is primarily known in some circles for appearing in a supporting role in the original Predator, better known in other circles for penning such action romps as Lethal Weapon and Last Action Hero, and mainly known in my circle for writing and directing the underrated gems Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys.
Ever since he first came up with the characters of Riggs and Murtaugh in 1987’s Lethal Weapon, Black has been slowly but surely building up his resume and experience with the likes of The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero and The Long Kiss Goodnight.
The flat jokes are a strange misstep for writer-director Shane Black, who, between The Nice Guys, The Long Kiss Goodnight (and yeah, let’s throw Last Action Hero in there too), has a proven track record with quick-witted characters.
For those who don’t know, Shane Black is responsible for writing cult-classic films of the 1980s and 1990s, including Lethal Weapon (1987), The Monster Squad (1987), The Last Boy Scout (1991), Last Action Hero (1993) and The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996).
Anyway, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is a first-time directorial effort by Shane Black, who is nevertheless no stranger to humorous action movies, having written "Lethal Weapon," "Last Action Hero," and "The Last Boy Scout."
He wrote "Lethal Weapon," "The Last Boy Scout," "Last Action Hero" and "The Long Kiss Goodnight," huge, noisy films, all of them, with ludicrous plots and over-the-top action sequences.
The same kind of movie as Doug Liman's Mr. and Mrs. Smith but more so, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang marks the hyphenate debut of star screenwriter Shane Black, and it's the kind of movie his Last Action Hero would have been had they aimed it at adults (and cast actors).
Black has written many action movies - among them the Lethal Weapon series - and he co-wrote Last Action Hero, a self-conscious, self-referential work about a movie star that confounded its audience.
After all but defining the action-buddy-comedy genre with "Lethal Weapon" and the underappreciated "The Last Boy Scout", Mr. Black became Hollywood's highest paid writer for the ill-fated "Last Action Hero" and "The Long Kiss Goodnight".
He's had success on varying levels ever since, from the misunderstood Last Action Hero to the entertaining but underappreciated The Long Kiss Goodnight.
It was also the calling call for Shane Black, who was in his early 20s when he wrote the script and went on to pen other pictures like Last Action Hero and The Long Kiss Goodbye and write and direct Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (his best film) and, most recently, the cluttered Iron Man 3.
But there is plenty of cool in The Nice Guys, the third film helmed by Shane Black, who got his start writing wisecracking action classics like Lethal Weapon and Last Action Hero before getting into directing himself.
The relationship is the extra dimension that the movie requires, proving once again that Black has a great teen movie in him – that is, if he wasn’t put off the prospect by his involvement in 1993 dud “Last Action Hero.”
Like many of the films Black penned during his initial glory days as Hollywood’s go-to screenwriter for macho-comical action films (his credits include 1987’s Lethal Weapon, 1991’s The Last Boy Scout, and 1993’s Last Action Hero), The Nice Guys is a buddy movie about two unlikely partners who are forced to work together.
That’s a surprising tenor to come from Black, whose equally pulpy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang ran mostly on comic bile and whose early-career screenplays for the likes of Lethal Weapon and Last Action Hero were witty shoot-’em-ups.
Written and directed by Shane Black — who wrote the first two Lethal Weapon movies, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang , The Long Kiss Goodnight , and Last Action Hero — this flick has a good action/mystery pedigree and it really shows.
Shane Black, writer of such infamous screenplays as Lethal Weapon and Last Action Hero, made one of my all-time favorite directorial debuts with 2005’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
Once a preeminent enabler of Hollywood's addiction to excess—he was the screenwriter for Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero, and The Long Kiss Goodnight—Black subsequently took a decade off before offering amends as the writer/director of 2005's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, a wicked, ironic homage to the hard-boiled noir.
Shane Black has also written the " Lethal Weapon " films, " The Monster Squad ," and " Last Action Hero ."
Shane Black took over as director of "Iron Man 3," and he's opted for a more "buddy cop" approach -- a style he's used in writing movies like "Lethal Weapon" and "Last Action Hero."
While Black’s work is surely to be commended in many ways (he went on to direct and co-write the recent action blockbuster Iron Man 3 from 2013), lending his pen to a spoof of his own work is an irony that could be best appreciated within the fictional universe of Last Action Hero itself.

But Simon Pegg’s lead is an action hero among regular folk… Hot Fuzz reminds me a lot of Last Action Hero .
