George Banks is an ordinary, middle-class man whose 22 year-old daughter Annie has decided to marry a man from an upper-class family, but George can't think of what life would be like without his daughter. His wife tries to make him happy for Annie, but when the wedding takes place at their home and a foreign wedding planner takes over the ceremony, he becomes slightly insane.

Given the excellence of 1950's Father of the Bride, a Best Picture Oscar nominee starring Spencer Tracy as the father and Elizabeth Taylor as the bride, the 1991 remake couldn't possibly have been more needless, though it at least gives Steve Martin a role which suits his wild and crazy talents.
But with "Father of the Bride," director Charles Shyer and his co-writing/producing partner Nancy Meyers have managed to bring the story of the 1950 film into the '90s, remain faithful to the source material and still make an up-to-date, warm comedy.
These are the contempo, California-casual versions of 1950's Father of the Bride and 1951's Father's Little Dividend that one should expect from the then-married couple Charles Shyer (director, producer, co-writer) and Nancy Meyers (producer, co-writer): sunny, sweet, and safe.
…out of Father of the Bride (June 8/05) Father of the Bride is based on the Spencer Tracy/Elizabeth Taylor film of the same name, and follows well-to-do businessman George Banks (Steve Martin) as he attempts to deal with his daughter's upcoming nuptials.
While Dad has a muted Ted Danson, Father of the Bride has a Steve Martin at the top of his middle-aged game.
Just as the 1950 original was followed by 1951's Father's Little Dividend, this one was followed four years later by Father of the Bride Part II, in which George freaks out when he learns that both his wife and daughter are simultaneously pregnant.
Perhaps more to the point, he plays a role much like the one played by Alan Alda in " Betsy's Wedding ," and although Alda has made a career out of playing nice guys and usually does it convincingly, I liked Martin better.
