We’ve been watching them for decades, from emotional dramas like Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) to more humorous takes on the subject in Irreconcilable Differences (1984) and Mrs. Doubtfire (1993).
Although the automatic correlation to make with M3GAN is that it’s a mere pale imitation of the Child’s Play movies (particularly the 2019 one), at the core of the story is “the Baby Boom narrative.”
Why Him? is also a rip-off of Father of the Bride, an archetypal story to be fair, but mangles any comedy inherent in that premise anyway.
This latest iteration of a story we've seen many times before — from Vincente Minnelli's Father of the Bride to Meet the Parents (which was co-written by this film's director, John Hamburg) — isn't especially good, nor is it bad.
Cowritten and directed by John Hamburg, who wrote Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers, and Little Fockers, Franco's movie gleefully parodies that earlier franchise, along with classics like Vincente Minnelli’s Father of the Bride and Stanley Kramer’s Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
Although the Meet the Parents/Father of the Bride template has been updated to have off-color jokes, it still keeps the angelic daughter on the sidelines for most of the film.
“Father of the Bride” zaniness gets repackaged with dope tattoos and digital-native aesthetics in “Why Him?,” a James Franco-Bryan Cranston teaming that’s not as wild as intended, but reasonably diverting just the same.
Given the excellence of 1950's Father of the Bride, a Best Picture Oscar nominee starring Spencer Tracy as the father and Elizabeth Taylor as the bride, the 1991 remake couldn't possibly have been more needless, though it at least gives Steve Martin a role which suits his wild and crazy talents.
But with "Father of the Bride," director Charles Shyer and his co-writing/producing partner Nancy Meyers have managed to bring the story of the 1950 film into the '90s, remain faithful to the source material and still make an up-to-date, warm comedy.
These are the contempo, California-casual versions of 1950's Father of the Bride and 1951's Father's Little Dividend that one should expect from the then-married couple Charles Shyer (director, producer, co-writer) and Nancy Meyers (producer, co-writer): sunny, sweet, and safe.

Writers David Swift, Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer (the latter two who teamed for "Baby Boom" and "Father of the Bride" I and II) wisely don't fiddle much with the story (based, as was the first film, on the book "Das Doppelte Lottchen" by Erich Kastner), which finds a pair of identical twin sisters separated at birth accidentally meeting at summer camp.
Meyers and Shyer have specialized in light domestic comedies ("Baby Boom,'' "Father Of The Bride''), and they make this into a good one--a family picture that's not too soppy for adults.
The Meyers-Shyer team -- which includes Cincinnati native Bruce Block as co-producer -- have a sure hand with family comedies such as Baby Boom, Father of the Bride and Irreconcilable Differences.
Marge’s personality and circumstances don’t change and yet the movie isn’t the kind of comedy that sells suburban culture to suburbanites in suburban malls--the way Parenthood and the Father of the Bride movies have done.
