When secretive new neighbors move in next door, suburbanite Ray Peterson and his friends let their paranoia get the best of them as they start to suspect the newcomers of evildoings and commence an investigation. But it's hardly how Ray, who much prefers drinking beer, reading his newspaper and watching a ball game on the tube expected to spend his vacation.

What critics compared The 'Burbs to
That you may find its supposed take on suburbia far less disturbing (despite its title) than Joe Dante’s The ‘Burbs (1989) is another matter.
Besides, the movie has way more in common, in terms of actual execution, with 1984’s Body Double and 1989’s The ‘burbs than anything else.
Actually, if you want to compare Disturbia to something, it’s almost exactly like the Tom Hanks comedy The 'Burbs, only without any attempt to be funny and with a bunch of annoying, too-perfect teenagers.
In doing this, Peele references and draws upon the techniques of classic scary movies ( Rosemary’s Baby , Night of the Living Dead ), thrillers ( Rear Window ), and comedy and social problem movies ( The ’Burbs ).
Among its most obvious ancestors are "The Stepford Wives," "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," "They Live," "The 'Burbs" and "Rosemary's Baby" — stories in which the harrowing menace comes wrapped in a bland, neighborly smile.
Helmed by the directing trio known as RKSS (François Simard, Anouk Whissell, Yoann-Karl Whissell), this horror-thriller plays like the love child of The ‘Burbs and Stand By Me.

Who we do end up getting more out of is Plemons, who lurks around the sidelines in the film’s first half, carrying his teeny dog, trying to ingratiate himself into Max and Annie’s plans, and generally looking like a lost character from The ‘burbs , which in case you’re wondering, is a huge compliment.
