As the film’s technical marvels grow commonplace, it will look like a clunky old theme-park attraction, a Captain EO for our time.
More than just about any movie in recent memory (Marvel or otherwise), 1917 well and truly feels like it could be a theme park ride– specifically, the Star Tours/Captain EO model, in which the ticketholder is strapped into a seat, placed on a rail, and shepherded through a pre-filmed narrative under the illusion of movement and/or agency.
The whacked-out outer-space melodrama “Jupiter Ascending” has embedded in its genes the DNA of “Barbarella” and “Flash Gordon,” some dust from “Dune” and even a bit of Michael Jackson’s Disneyland short “Captain Eo.” Written and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski (the “Matrix” films), its earnest, adolescent enthusiasm is noble.
