What critics compared Smooth Talk to
Not merely the story of a boy coming of agethough rest assured that this ranks alongside 1959's "The 400 Blows," 1985's " Smooth Talk ," and 1986's "Stand by Me" as a new apex of the "coming-of-age" subgenrethe film just as emphatically encapsulates what it is like to be a sibling, a parent, a teenager and a grown-up.
The pink, cursive font of the opening credits immediately calls to mind '80s classics like Smooth Talk while the obsessive interest in functionality and work (and Cliff Martinez's awesome Tangerine Dream soundtrack) recalls Michael Mann's Thief, but it's that certain quality of masculine stillness that marks Drive as another Nicolas Winding Refn masterpiece.
