Without a Trace (1983)

English professor Susan Selky lives alone in a Brooklyn apartment with her young son, Alex. When Alex fails to return home from school one afternoon, a frantic Selky contacts the police. Detective Al Menetti, a father himself, takes an interest in the case that quickly turns into an obsession. As a devastated Selky struggles to come to terms with Alex's disappearance, Menetti steps out from behind the badge to continue investigating.

What critics compared Without a Trace to
Without a Trace…
McKenzie, who made her mark last year in “Without a Trace,” is the film’s heart and power, along with Johansson, which makes the discomfort that the story provokes more palpable.
The film's production makes great use of Boston landmarks like the swan boats and Fenway Park, but it reaches great heights with the Chelsea home of Donny under the looming Tobin bridge - MacFarlane's team has made this home as dreadful as the one in "Without a Trace" and Ribisi's dancing to Tiffany's 'I Think We're Alone Now' video will make your blood curdle.
Then again, it is a little better than "Sherlock Holmes" and as cinematic attempts to juice up the property go, it is certainly more tolerable than such excruciating works as "Without a Trace" or the abysmal "Young Sherlock Holmes," though it is hardly a patch on such borderline brilliant works as Billy Wilder's "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" or "The Seven-Per-Cent Solution."
