Village of Artigat, southern France, summer 1542, during the reign of Francis I. Martin Guerre and Bertrande de Rols marry. A few years later, accused of having committed a robbery, Martin suddenly disappears. When, almost a decade later, a man arrives in Artigat claiming to be Martin, the Guerre family recognizes him as such; but doubts soon arise about his true identity.

What critics compared The Return of Martin Guerre to
Loosely based on the graphic novel of the same name, "Violence" also seems to borrow some of its story elements from the French classic "The Return of Martin Guerre," in which a long-lost husband and father suddenly returns home to his family, much to the surprise of his wife, who isn't entirely certain he's the man she married years ago.
What do you get if you mix “Gladiator,” “The Return of Martin Guerre,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Elizabeth,” “Troy,” “The Seventh Seal,” and a hundred buckets of mud?
It's a hint of of The Return of Martin Guerre , a touch of The Taming of the Shrew in the sparring relationship between chestnut-haired Mistress Marion and the gruff, crusty-faced Robin with his cropped hair and leather tunic.
