Altman is known for his eclectic casts, but this one might top the list: Bouton (a Major League Baseball pitcher), Nina van Pallandt (a baroness, a calypso singer, and Clifford Irving’s girlfriend at the time of his fake Howard Hughes biography), Mark Rydell (later the Oscar-nominated director of On Golden Pond ), Sterling Hayden (the ever-mercurial actor used by Kubrick in The Killing and Dr. Strangelove ), and an uncredited Arnold Schwarzenegger in only his second screen appearance.
As adapted by Jan Sardi and Jeremy Leven and directed by Nick Cassavetes, Rowlands's son, "The Notebook" is two movies, one dubiously hitched to the other, like "On Golden Pond" stuffed inside some young-adult romance.
Call it mature love, if that doesn't conjure images from On Golden Pond or Harold and Maude.

But rarer is the memorable movie that portrays a dad and his adult daughter: “ On Golden Pond ,” both versions of “Father of the Bride,” “ Coyote Ugly ,” maybe “ Chinatown ” and “ Taken ” if you stretch matters a bit.
It's barely been a month since I decreed that No Escape was the most intense motion picture I've seen in 2015, and yet here's Sicario storming through the gate and proving so potent that the Owen Wilson flick suddenly seems as incendiary as On Golden Pond by comparison.
Kill Bill is to Pulp Fiction as Pulp Fiction was to On Golden Pond.
