In the prehistoric world, a Cro-Magnon tribe depends on an ever-burning source of fire, which eventually extinguishes. Lacking the knowledge to start a new fire, the tribe sends three warriors on a quest for more. With the tribe's future at stake, the warriors make their way across a treacherous landscape full of hostile tribes and monstrous beasts. On their journey, they encounter Ika, a woman who has the knowledge they seek.

What critics compared Quest for Fire to
The end result plays like a cranked-up simian riposte to the French-Canadian film Quest for Fire , or an alternative-universe extension of the "dawn of man" sequence from Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey , which went head to head with the original Planet of the Apes in 1968.
The movie seems populated with only villains — sometimes it’s the military, sometimes it’s the creepy industrialist who wants to use the Hulk for his own purposes, and sometimes it’s Banner’s crazy dad (Nick Nolte, looking as if he were auditioning for “Quest for Fire”), who has returned to finish the experiments he started when his son was a boy.
With the same eye for detail that was evident in Quest for Fire, this French director transports us back to the menacing primitive world ruled by primal emotions.
But no, those are gothic faces, says director Jean-Jacques Annaud, who gave us the Cro-Magnon romance "Quest for Fire."
