Dave, nineteen, has just graduated high school, with his three friends: the comical Cyril, the warm hearted but short-tempered Moocher, and the athletic, spiteful but good-hearted Mike. Now, Dave enjoys racing bikes and hopes to race the Italians one day, and even takes up the Italian culture, much to his friends' and parents' annoyance.

What critics compared Breaking Away to
Fans of Peter Yates’ brilliant film Breaking Away (1979) will feel a kinship here, and that’s even before you learn that director Enrico Casarosa showed that movie’s script to Luca ‘s writers as inspiration.
But there are rare formula pictures—the bicycle movie Breaking Away (1979) was another—that seem to be arriving at the formula from the inside, with a kind of naive hopefulness that seems as much a product of movie-love as it is of a desire to reach a mass audience.
The satisfying result is a little like “Breaking Away” (1979), along with a dash of John Hughes and an appreciation for life’s big and small transitions.

It’s a movie that takes at least some of its prompts from one of the best young romances of the ’70s, “Breaking Away.”
The sports movies I come away remembering— Breaking Away , Eight Men Out , North Dallas Forty —are about things that happen on the periphery of the big game: intrigue, romance, betrayal, or in the case of Moneyball, back-room horse-trading.
By the time the thing has played out, that subtle scare/laugh mix is a thing of the past and you feel as though you just walked out of "Breaking Away" or "Goonies."
"HOOSIERS" is a rousing work of hoops and hooplah from the state that's already given us such cheering American institutions as "Breaking Away" and David Letterman.
