After a seven-year absence, Charlotte Andergast travels to Sweden to reunite with her daughter Eva. The pair have a troubled relationship: Charlotte sacrificed the responsibilities of motherhood for a career as a classical pianist. Over an emotional night, the pair reopen the wounds of the past. Charlotte gets another shock when she finds out that her mentally impaired daughter, Helena, is out of the asylum and living with Eva.

What critics compared Autumn Sonata to
There are shades of Autumn Sonata (1978) or Cries & Whispers (1972), films where imperious, overbearing parents or formidable family estates slowly crush the families living in them.
You could put scenes from both versions of the film in front of someone who knows absolutely nothing about the filmmaking process (Paul W.S. Anderson not included) and I am certain that nearly all of them would come away liking the original more because it involved real people taking part in real stunts for people who knew how to stage and execute an action sequence--by comparison, the action in this remake is so devoid of anything resembling excitement that it could be argued that “Autumn Sonata” had more genuine edge-of-your-seat thrills by comparison.
Even the quietest, character-driven dialogue scenes are overwhelmed by the music; to get an idea of the effect, imagine watching a scene from Bergmans "Autumn Sonata" with the soundtrack for "Koyaanisqatsi" blasting in the background and drowning out everything.
Miss Bergman is splendid in a role that quietly hints at her bravura possibilities realized by Ingmar Bergman in last year's "Autumn Sonata."
