What critics compared The Boys from Brazil to
Stewart was bleakly haunted as Scottie in Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958), and Peck was dark as Josef Mengele in The Boys from Brazil (1978) and as Ahab in Huston's Moby Dick (1956).
When Danny waxes ironic at a froufrou shindig amongst high-rolling haters (a gathering that would have been at home in outrageous schlock like The Boys From Brazil and is as inflammatory and ridiculous as a belief that Jews gather in a luxury cave to fix world events), The Believer sacrifices itself to contrivance and head-slapping improbabilities.
The return to the harrowing holocaust scenes which opened 2000’s X-Men results in a The Boys From Brazil style Nazi-hunt, and there’s some brilliant faux-retro effects too; TV serial split-screens during the training sequence, and a kaleidoscope effect for Xavier’s first big display of telepathy.
