Instead of Punch-and-Judy histrionics, director Madsen's screenplay (co-written with Lars Andersen) covers similar overlooked ground as Paul Verhoeven's Soldier of Orange — that is, a more-or-less true story of homegrown Northern European resistance to Nazi occupation — in the code-named characters of Flame (Thure Lindhardt), a cool-headed anti-fascist killer who's also a Copenhagen police officer, and Citron (Mads Mikkelsen), a scruffy leftist family man who at first appears to just be along for the ride.
He is both a provocateur and a gonzo craftsman; from Dutch successes ( Soldier Of Orange , The Fourth Man ) to Hollywood sci-fi blockbusters (RoboCop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers ), the director has found a way to merge dark satirical wit with a taste for excesses of sex and violence.
Coming off a handful of fascinating Dutch films, including the excellent Soldier of Orange and The 4th Man , Verhoeven set to work on the futuristic RoboCop , from a script by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, after being scorned by history.
