What critics compared New York, New York to
The story, a star-crossed romance between a down-and-out actress (Emma Stone) and a brooding jazzbo (Ryan Gosling), may echo Martin Scorsese's New York, New York (1977) and, earlier still, George Cukor's A Star Is Born (1954).
While the film may at first instance recall the likes of Casino and Goodfellas, it’s actually the much-maligned musical New York, New York that springs to mind as its most logical cousin.
Some of his more ambitious features -- including New York, New York (1977), The King of Comedy (1982), The Color of Money (1986), and Casino (1995) -- might even be said to be duels between adult and adolescent impulses.
