What critics compared Caged Heat to
At first glance, one might assume that it is striving to be a contemporary version of films such as Jonathan Demme’s “Caged Heat,” Stephanie Rothman’s “Terminal island” and virtually the entire oeuvre of the late Larry Cohen—movies that blended together easily exploitable genre elements (blood, breasts and beasts, as Joe Bob Briggs would say) with screenplays that examined the social issues of the day alongside all of the trashier stuff.
But he’s different from the directors who brag about coming up through, say, Roger Corman but whose movies gradually achieve a tastefulness that has nothing to do with a movie like “Caged Heat” or “Cockfighter.”
Rachel Getting Married, Demme's latest film, is like a digest for everything he has stood for as a filmmaker since 1974's women-in-prison classic Caged Heat.
Demme provides Lecter with the kind of lurid, B-movie buildup the director cut his teeth on back in the Seventies with Caged Heat and Fighting Mad.

You might even wonder why the maker of "Melvin and Howard" and "Something Wild" would be drawn to such nightmarish stuff, but only if you've forgotten his B-movie roots ("Caged Heat") or his 1979 Hitchcockian excursion, "Last Embrace."
