M*A*S*H (1970)

Directed by Robert Altman

One of the world's most acclaimed comedies, M*A*S*H focuses on three Korean War Army surgeons brilliantly brought to life by Donald Sutherland, Tom Skerritt and Elliott Gould. Though highly skilled and deeply dedicated, they adopt a hilarious, lunatic lifestyle as an antidote to the tragedies of their Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, and in the process infuriate Army bureaucrats. Robert Duvall, Gary Burghoff and Sally Kellerman co-star as a sanctimonious Major, an other-worldly Corporal, and a self-righteous yet lusty nurse.

They seemed to have walked out of a darker version of MASH where Hawkeye and Duke terrorize people and secretly record underage girls in dressing rooms.

Jones' stated inspirations such as "MASH" and "A Clockwork Orange" compete with the likes of "Blade Runner," "Cabaret," "Witness" and "The Blue Angel" for space in one's mental streaming queue to the detriment of the story he is trying to tell.

There are other nice touches, too, such as the use of pop music on the soundtrack and a certain gallows-humor spirit among the men that calls to mind movies made around 1970 such as “MASH.”

Odysseus basically pulled a Klinger from M*A*S*H, trying to get out of having to go to war by acting like he was insane…

Gosford Park poster
"Gosford Park" is such a joyous and audacious achievement it deserves comparison with his very best movies, such as "MASH," " McCabe and Mrs. Miller ," " Nashville ," " The Player ," " Short Cuts " and " Cookie's Fortune ."
Directed by Altman (MASH, Cookie's Fortune ), it takes place during a weekend party at a British country home during the early 1930s, with a numerous cast of talented actors, a sumptuous and richly detailed setting, and an anonymous murder thrown in for good measure.

Short Cuts poster
Altman made four or five masterpieces in the early l970s, “M.A.S.H.,” “McCabe and Mrs. Miller” (my personal favorite), “The Long Goodbye,” “Thieves Like Us,” and the Oscar-nominated “Nashville,” which was also singled out as the best film of l975 by my New York colleagues.
