What critics compared Fando and Lis to
He was a theatrical director in Mexico during the late 1960s who went on to make a trio of surrealist films: Fando and Lis, El Topo, and The Holy Mountain.
The Princess Bride, Del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone and Jodorowsky’s Fando and Lis are all ingredients for Tarsem’s spellbinding movie (unfortunately saddled with a 15 cert for strong violence) but kids and adults sat in front of this are unlikely to forget its mystical atmosphere, achingly detailed visuals (big screen or HD viewings are mandatory), and beguiling story.
It is vastly better than the same director's "Fando and Lis," but vastly inferior to Arrabal's "Viva La Muerte," a work in the same tradition of surreal violence to which all other works in this tradition must stand comparison.
A tumultuous cause celebre at festivals, it paved the way for the director's rise from small-time poseur to big-time poseur with El Topo a few years later.
