Written by the Coens, the film is also a kind of mash-up of the 1963 Disney kiddie film “The Incredible Journey,” a tale of two dogs and a cat, and the 2011 PBS documentary “The Legends of Folk: The Village Scene.”

Saroo doesn’t have much to work with (he doesn’t know his mother’s name or the name of his village), but you know how such things work in the movies—bits of memory come flooding back and he pieces together enough information to go on a journey, the conclusion of which should have had the audience in tears, but instead had me thinking of The Incredible Journey , and not in a good way.

As for the storyline, it's a familiar one to anybody who's ever sat through earlier Disney films (both animated and live-action), employing elements previously seen in everything from Bambi (loss of a parent) to Pinocchio (accepting responsibility) to The Incredible Journey (braving impossible odds to be reunited with a loved one).
