What critics compared The Diary of Anne Frank to
The Pianist has already, jokingly, been referred to as ‘The Diary of Anne Frank meets CastAway’ and that’s not too far from the truth.
The confusion is deliberate and necessary, and by the end, the story (told in Spanish with English subtitles) is as emotionally draining as "The Diary of Anne Frank," which in some ways it resembles.
Who needs bummers like "Schindler's List" and "The Diary of Anne Frank," or even the historically based "Defiance," which featured Jews killing Nazis but was mucked up by all those pesky debates about morality?
Natalie Portman, who was amazing in "The Professional" (1994) and did a star turn last year on Broadway in "The Diary of Anne Frank," is almost intriguing here as Queen Amidala of the planet Naboo, with her white-and-red pancake makeup and enormous royal beehive 'do.

It's a tremendous, confident retelling of an absurdly over-the-top - yet somehow real - rescue mission that's part "Ocean's Eleven," part "The Great Escape," with just a touch of "The Diary of Anne Frank."
