What emerges over the course of the two-hour picture, however, feels more like an attempted update of “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon,” with Willis sitting in for John Wayne and an imposing band of Nigerian rebels taking the place of the Indians.
In fact, you could well draw a line directly from the westerns of Ford to Nomadland — not Ford’s brawling, boastful westerns like She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Fort Apache , but his reflective, uncertain works like The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance .
It’s no coincidence that a key sequence is set in Monument Valley, a location that popped up in “The Searchers,” “Stagecoach,” and “She Wore A Yellow Ribbon” among others.
Take away its military setting and state-of-the-art aircraft, and "Maverick" is a John Ford Western in disguise, "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" to the original "Top Gun's" "Stagecoach."

The movie was based on a novel by Alan LeMay and a script by Ford's son-in-law Frank Nugent, the onetime film critic who wrote 10 Ford films, including “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” and “Wagon Master.”
