Sure, Waititi isn’t remaking Rossellini’s Germany Year Zero, but still…
Part All Quiet on the Western Front, part Diary of Anne Frank, part Germany Year Zero, and all Taika Waititi, Jojo Rabbit is an immensely important and timely addition to the canon of anti-war art.
Put another way, Godzilla is the Germany Year Zero of monster movies.
A grim movie perhaps, with its abandonment of the usual neo-realist view of children (compare Edmund to Bruno in De Sica's Bicycle Thieves (1948); or to the children of Rossellini's own Rome, Open City, but a great one: Rossellini provides a fitting end to both the trilogy and his 'pure' neo-realist period.
Germany Year Zero (1947) leaves Italy for the rubble of Berlin for a devastating portrait of post-World War II Germany, where an impoverished little boy falls under the sway of an unreformed Nazi whose propagandistic teachings results in terrible consequences, and Criterion masters its disc from the German version of the film.
Rome Open City is available exclusively as part of the three-disc “Roberto Rossellini’s War Trilogy” box set (SRP $99.95), which also includes Paisan (1946) and Germany Year Zero (1948).
The films that followed, City, Paisan and Germany Year Zero, were likewise deeply humanistic stories that are as inspiring now as they were 75 years ago, not least because of the humor.
