Cashier and part-time starving artist Christopher Cross is absolutely smitten with the beautiful Kitty March. Kitty plays along, but she's really only interested in Johnny, a two-bit crook. When Kitty and Johnny find out that art dealers are interested in Chris's work, they con him into letting Kitty take credit for the paintings. Cross allows it because he is in love with Kitty, but his love will only let her get away with so much.

Other performance of note include, Stefania Casini ( The Climber , Bloodstained Shadow ) in the role of Sara, a student who meets a grizzly fate due to her inquisitiveness, Joan Bennett ( Scarlet Street , “Dark Shadows” ) in the role of Madame Blanc and Alida Valli ( The Third Man , Inferno ) in the role of Miss Tanner, a domineering instructor at the academy.
Suspiria's plot is incidental: Susy Bannion (Jessica Harper) is an American ballet student who comes to study at a prestigious European dance academy run by Madame Blanc (Joan Benett, known best as the Femme Fatale in Scarlet Street).
Even Fritz Lang at his most fatalistic, in films like “ Scarlet Street” (1945) and “ Human Desire ” (1954), allowed his heroes some freedom, if only the freedom to fall for the wrong dame, but Lanthimos’s characters are in lockdown from the start.
Not unlike Fritz Lang’s equally misanthropic Scarlet Street, Ace in the Hole plays the squashing of one man’s human spirit for societal-weary gravitas.
