What critics compared Dumbo to
For the first time in about 60 years, watercolors are used for the background animation, giving the movie a throwback feel of classic Disney films like "Dumbo" and "Snow White."
It is written and directed by relative newcomers Dean Deblois and Chris Sanders (Sanders himself essays the voice of Stitch), who have notably chosen to use watercolor background paintings, a medium not used in a Disney feature since Dumbo (1941), adding, for better or worse, an old-fashioned touch to the film's overall look.
Instead, the use of watercolor scenery, a style that hasn't been used in the 60 years since "Dumbo," "Pinocchio," "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "Bambi," gives "Lilo & Stitch" a more folksy feel for its futuristic story line.
It was reminiscent of the two black crows from Disney’s Dumbo (which was made back in 1941).
Just as Tim Burton’s live-action remake of “Dumbo” (2019) sadly scrapped the comic relief of Timothy Q. Mouse, the new “Mulan” lacks the comic relief of Eddie Murphy’s red dragon sidekick Mushu, who paved the way for his hilarious Donkey in “Shrek” (2001).
She’s sensitive and overprotective and a tad peevish, a robot who speaks like a therapist and toggles through her built-in stereo to find out whether the infant prefers the soundtrack of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” or “Dumbo.”
An ensuing montage depicts Mother rearing this young girl, singing her to sleep with Dumbo ’s “Baby Mine,” giving her a stuffed rabbit, reading her The Wizard of Oz , and teaching her ballet and origami.
Mother cares deeply for Daughter, singing her "Baby Mine" — used more effectively here than in the recent "Dumbo" — and caring for her just like a flesh-and-blood mother.

We’re way past the gorgeous emotionalism of the Walt Disney masterpiece Dumbo (1942) but not yet beyond the self-pity of feeling outcast and marginal.
Old-school Disney was obviously a major influence formative on the director—recall the military man bawling at Dumbo way back in 1941— but his aesthetic grew up quite different, even (or especially) in his kid-safe movies.
Alternately, both feature a tough-guy commander who breaks down weeping: In 1941, Dumbo brings tears to a Disney -loving general (Spielberg's idea of a real patriot), and in Private Ryan, a heroic captain stops to cry because war is hell--and because Tom Hanks needs a moment to collect his Oscar.
