The Black Pirate (1926)

A nobleman vows to avenge the death of his father by the hands of pirates. To this end, he infiltrates the pirate band; Acting in character, he single-handedly captures a merchant vessel, but things are complicated when he finds that there is a beautiful young woman of royal blood aboard.

He re-creates Errol Flynn's splendid slides down a sail from The Seahawk (which in turn was inspired by Douglas Fairbanks' similar feat in The Black Pirate.
The result is a great adventure film that can stand on its own merits alongside such genre classics as The Black Pirate, Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk, while bringing something very new to the table.
The movie, of course, pokes good-natured fun at its famous predecessors, things like Doug Fairbanks's "The Black Pirate" (1926) and Errol Flynn's "Captain Blood" (1935) and "The Sea Hawk" (1940).
And so it is with Jackson; when I watch Legolas scrambling up that mûmak, my mind turns not to Tolkien (who wrote no such scene, anyway) but to Douglas Fairbanks, scaling the side of a ship, in “The Black Pirate,” with monkeyish ease and delight.
